On April 17, 1975, the Khmer Rouge (which at the time was secret) overtook the country of Cambodia. While in power, they would set limits on the Cambodian's life, jeopardizing their human rights. The Khmer Rouge would put the cambodian in forced labor in harsh conditions. Unfortunately,  the Khmer Rouge would also commited many genocides (acts of killing people to get rid of them). These acts would eventually lead to the deaths of about two million people.

The Khmer Rouge overtook Cambodia in the 1970's. Cambodia is located in South Asia, to the left of Vietnam, where the Vietnam War (north vietnam vs south vietnam (with support from U.S)). While under the control of Lol Nol of the Khmer Republic, the land was often used as a battlefield. In between 1970 and 1974, about 750,000 Cambodians were killed by the war. Because of these events, many Cambodians were droving to Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge guerilla movement. Many Cambodians saw it as a image of hope and freedom for Cambodia. By 1975, 700,000 men had joined the movement. On April 17, the movement took Phnom Penh, a major city in Cambodia and Cambodia offically fell into Khmer Rouge's hands. After the take over of Cambodia, the Khmer Rouge forced Cambodians from their home to the countryside to start working on agricultural work. Those who refused to leave were killed. Those with disabilite were killed. Those who were old or young were also killed. What the Khmer Rouge wanted was a equal socitly with no rich or poor. In order to accompshy this, they banned money, free markets, normal schooling, private property, foreign clothing styles, religious practices, and traditional Khmer culture. They also closed down schools and churchs. There was no public transportion nor privete property. The Canbodians were force to wear black clothing. Relationships with family members or others was often not ?. To show any emotions wasn't allow. The Khmer Rouge decided that only pure people were allow in charge of the movement. They would kill any one tried to the Khmer Republic. They would also killed anyone realated to relgion or forgion countries. They would also kill anyone who whored glasses because that was a sign of intelligence. When the workers were no longer fit for duty, they were to be killed. Ashtoning, an prison, know as S - 21, had about14,000 people. Only tweve survived. It was often that people were killed for practely no reason or weren't to blame. In fact, one of the Khmer Rouge's slogon stated "To spare you is no profit, to destroy you is no loss.” These acts of genicode would go on for about 4 years.

On Christmas day, 1978, the rein of Pol Pot came to an end when a Vietnum invasion force drew back the Khmer Rouge. The leaders, including Pol Pot, escaped but were eventually arrested or had die. Unforently, these genicodes are often consided one of the worse human tragedies. About two millions Canbodians died from lack of medicane. Thousands were maded widows and orphans and many now have disabities due to forced work. In fact, many Cambodians (hundred thousands) have left Cambodia. Those who are still there have mental ploblems and their spriets are now broken.
